'Protecting God's Children' class set

Our Lady of Joy Parish is holding a "Protecting God's Children" class on Aug. 27, at 7 p.m.

Anyone who volunteers at Our Lady of Joy must take this one-time, two-hour class because of the new requirements for volunteers and employees in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Call the religious education office at 412-795-4389 to register for class.

Our Lady of Joy has held two meetings to explain the requirements. Any volunteer who hasn't attended either meeting must attend the next meeting on Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Father Marchukonis Hall.

The Aug. 20 meeting will explain the clearances, and forms to obtain these clearances will be distributed.

Reservations are not necessary for the Aug. 20 meeting, but registration is required for the Protecting God's Children class.

All volunteers and teachers who work with children at St. John the Baptist Church also must attend the workshop. Call Greg Callaghan at 412-795-3388 for information.

Theology on Tap

Theology on Tap will be at the Rivertowne Pourhouse in Monroeville at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Young adults ages 18 to 35 are encouraged to attend this event that includes a guest speaker and complimentary refreshments.

Children's break

KidzSTUF at Pittsburgh East Community Church will not be held in August.

Beginning in September, KidzSTUF will move to the first weekend of each month.

KidzSTUF follows the adult service and takes place in the Kidz Theatre at the church along O'Block Road in Plum.

Summer festival

Our Lady of Joy Church's 12th annual end-of-summer festival will be Aug. 15 and 16.

There will be live entertainment, ethnic foods, bingo, rides, an $8,800 raffle and a polka Mass. The festival will be held at the church along Oblock Road from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday. The polka Mass will be at 4 p.m. Aug. 16.

Aug. 17 will serve as a rain date if needed, and the festival would be held that day from 1 to 5 p.m.

Entertainment will be provided by the New Holidays on Aug. 15 from 6:30 to 9:30, and by the Lukitsch Polka Band at the same time the next night.

Living Proof simulcast

The "Living Proof Live 2008" simulcast will be broadcast at The Presbyterian Church of Plum Creek Aug. 1 and 2.

Join Bible teacher Beth Moore and worship leader Travis Cottrell live via satellite for the fourth annual national Living Proof Live simulcast.

All women in the community are invited to attend the event. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. Register at info@plumcreek.com or call 412-793-4525.

Doors open Aug. 1 at 6:30 p.m. The program is held from 7:30 to 10. A continental breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m. the next day, and the program is held from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Moore has published seven Bible studies and also has written a devotional journal, an inspiration collection of poetry and essays and eight trade books.

Sewing class

St. John the Baptist School's sewing class needs sewing machines for the upcoming school year.

Anyone who would like to donate a sewing machine to the school can drop it off at the school office Monday through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., beginning Aug. 4.
