Race for section title comes down to finale

The Section 4-AAAA baseball championship came down to the section finale between Pittsburgh Central Catholic and Plum yesterday (Wednesday) at Plum High School.

The game was to be played past the deadline for this week's edition.

Plum came into the game 10-1 in section play. It's only previous loss in section came against Central Catholic in a 13-3 setback on April 16.

The Mustangs bounced back from that loss and won seven in a row overall and five straight in section heading into yesterday's contest with the Vikings.

In the seven-game streak, which included big wins over North Allegheny (4-1) at PNC Park, Franklin Regional (1-0) and Gateway (4-1), Plum out-scored its opponents, 43-7.

On Saturday, Plum handed Franklin Regional only its fourth loss in 16 games this season.

The Mustangs defeated Woodland Hills, 6-0, on Monday, which ended the Wolverines' hopes of making the playoffs.

Woodland Hills and Penn Hills played yesterday in a game that closed out each team's section slate.

The baseball playoff pairings committee is scheduled to meet tomorrow (Friday) and the pairings could be released shortly after the meeting.

The baseball playoffs for Quad-A tentatively are slated to begin on Tuesday.

Gateway is locked into the third playoff position out of Section 4.

The Gators closed out its section schedule at McKeesport yesterday (Wednesday).

Gateway came into the game with a 7-4 record.

The Mustangs enter the playoffs looking to erase the bad memory of last year's WPIAL tournament.

Plum began the 2007 Quad-A playoffs as the No. 1 seed.

Plum used a dramatic 4-3 win against North Allegheny in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinal round.

However, a tough 5-3 loss to Peters Township in the semifinals and a one-run defeat in the third-place game kept the Mustangs out of the state playoffs and ended their season.

Clint White said he had some frustrating moments during Plum's battle with Pittsburgh Central Catholic for the Section 4-AAAA championship Wednesday at Plum High School.

The Mustang senior pitcher started the section finale and cruised through the first three innings but gave up three runs in the fourth.
At the plate, he knocked in a run with a groundout in the third but wasn't able to get a two-out hit with a runner on second in both the first and fifth innings.

Then came the bottom of the seventh.
With the Mustangs and Vikings knotted at three and the title on the line, White delivered.

He clubbed a two-out, RBI single to right field that scored Kyle Simmons with the game-winning run as Plum downed Central Catholic, 4-3, and claimed its second straight section title.
