Rain toys with Plum Legion schedule
Earlier this week, weather conditions were more suited for a duck than an American Legion baseball team.
Plum had four of its scheduled games postponed by rain from Friday through Monday.
The only game in that stretch to make it into the record books was a forfeit win over Elliott on Saturday.
"I can't remember a season with this many days rained out," said Bill Holmes, Plum head coach.
Monday's game against Bethel Park is rescheduled for Sunday, after a game against Monroeville.
"In June of 1980 or 1981, it rained 26 of the 30 days, but we played every game on the date they were scheduled," Holmes said.
"We played at the old Plum High School field, and the field drained well."
The rainouts are added to the games postponed from earlier in the season when the Plum High School team was competing in the WPIAL and PIAA playoffs.
"If we start on time, we probably have six or seven more games played," Holmes said.
Plum's only loss so far this season was a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Shaler.
The two squads sit atop the Allegheny River League standings with only one loss each.
Over the past couple of weeks, Plum earned wins over West Deer, Ninth Ward and Lincoln Place.
It also went 5-2 at the Steubenville Tournament and brought home the championship trophy.
Plum's scheduled game against West Deer last night was to be played past the deadline for this week's edition.
"It's been frustrating for the guys because they think they are going to play ball, and then they can't because of the weather," Holmes said.
"They want to be out there playing baseball."
Plum travels to Penn Hills for a league contest tonight (Thursday) at 6 p.m. at Penn Hills High School.
Sunday's game against Monroeville is set for a noon start at CCAC-Boyce Field.
The Bethel Park contest will follow about 30 minutes after the first game.
Plum hosts Ninth Ward on Monday at 6 p.m. at Boyce Field.
